Children The World Forgot

My name is Luka I live on the second floor

I live upstairs from you

Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight

Just don't ask me what it was ..
Just don't ask me what it was Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy I try not to talk too loud

Maybe it's because I'm crazy I try not to act too proud

They only hit until you cry And after that you don't ask why

You just don't argue anymore You just don't argue anymore You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay I walked into the door again

Well, if you ask that's what I'll say

And it's not your business anyway

I guess I'd like to be alone

With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how I am Just don't ask me how I am

Concrete Angel Campaign ...

thank you belle ame for highlighting this:

Concrete Angel

She walks to school with the lunch she packed Nobody knows what she's holdin' back
Wearin' the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with linen and lace

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm

Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain She stands hard as a stone

In a world that she can't rise above But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved ... Concrete angel
Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights

A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate

When morning comes it'll be too late

~warm hugs my beautiful sister~ you are most welcome and i do thank you again for your wonderful posts on this subject. i had forgotten about that song Luka.. this line stands out a lot "And it's not your business anyway" .. it IS everyone's business to step in to report Child Abuse when Y/you see it or think a child is being abused. i can't tell even begin to tell you sis how many times i have done just that. my home has always been a safe haven for my son's friends even for my god-daughter and her friends. a place they can go to when the going gets rough at their house. when mommy or daddy has had a few too many or forgotten to feed them. or when they needed someone to talk to without being torn to shreds. i sit here in tears thinking of the many kids that have passed thru my home. as i stated in my comments on blog, i was an abused child and then an abused wife. both physical and mental.. it doesn't matter that i came from a nice home per se, money etc.. Child Abuse happens in all walks of life.. it's not just physical but also mental. shaking head .. grrrrrrrrrr .. i pray for the abusers that they get what is coming to them.. mind you i am not a violent person. but i do believe in some cases justice need be served... with that said i will make my exit and head back to sleep.. love you dearly my beautiful sister and friend.. ~warmest of hugs and sweet kisses~ belle

Thanks for spreading the word...I do have some ideas for punishment for child abusers, predators...Use a firemans pole, weld razor blades to the outside of it, put a kids plastic play swimming pool at the bottom of the pole. Once the predator is found guilty, tie a rope around his genitals, let him slide down the pole (cutting himself repeatedly on the razor blades)into a pool of rubbing alcohol (the sting of pain will still compare on what they inflicted), then let family members pull him from the pool with the aforementioned rope around his genitals, finally allow the court of the common people to throw Dr. Seuss books at him repeatedly until he dies, this should take awhile, but will be therapeutic to everyone involved. Also, make sure this is carried on the internet and all TV stations so others can see the punishment they will recived for their crimes.

The first time and everytime I hear this song....Tears flow down my cheek

Alyssa Lies - Jason Michael Carroll

Genre/Lang. : Country

My little girl met a new friend,
just the other day,
on the playground at school
between the tires and the swings

But she came home with tear-filled eyes,
and she said to me "Daddy, Alyssa lies"

Well I just brushed it off at first,
cause I didn't know how much my little girl had been hurt
o'er the things she had seen.
I wasn't ready when I said "You can tell me"

and she said...

Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise

My little girl laid her head down that night to go to sleep.
As I stepped out the room, I heard her say a prayer so soft and sweet
"God bless my mom and my dad
and my new friend, Alyssa
I know she needs you bad"

Because Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise

(bridge)

I had the worst night of sleep in years
as I tried to think of a way to calm her fears
I knew exactly what I had to do
but when we got to school on Monday I heard the news

My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad.
The lump in my throat grew bigger
with every question that she asked.
Until I felt the tears run down my face
and I told her that Alyssa wouldn't be at school today

Cause she doesn't lie in the classroom
she doesn't lie anymore at school
Alyssa lies with Jesus
because there's nothin' anyone would do.

Tears filled my eyes, when my little girl asked me why
Alyssa lies. daddy tell me why
Alyssa lies

As a child I remember being called to my bedroom to be "punished". I was filled with such dread I could hardly move. I knew if i didn't go quickly into the room it would only be worse. But how could it be worse than last time? How could the pain be worse? It was bad enough to be whipped by my mother with my fathers razor strap, let alone being made to take my clothes all off in front of my older sister and her watch the whole time. While she grinned and made fun.
Mother would start whipping my bum hard, then work on my thighs as I lay flat on the bed. there was no give in it. When my mother's anger subsided she stopped. She would be out of breath, sweating and so tired she couldn't raise her arm anymore.
I was cried out. The pain so bad I couldn't move, but that wasn't enough for mother. I was made to put my clothes on and sit on the front porch for an hour so the nieghbors could see I had been bad. I honestly don't know which was worse, the beating or the humliation.
Honestly I am glad I never had children. I don't know if I would be any better than my mother. I have a violent temper at times.
So to you Blonde Angel, your friends and all your good works. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope no child ever has to be hurt again

child abyse vs WAR: Fatality Comparison

The War Zone

The total USA Military fatality count in both Iraqui operations, from March 2003 to the present:

3,260 in that FOUR year period to date.

Is this acceptable?
Does it seem reasonable?
Does it anger or dismay Y/you?

...........Hold that thought.......

Now consider these figures for the past YEAR

1,426 children killed by abuse and/neglect in the USA in ONE year (the majority <4>

1,232 women killed by an intimate partner in the USA in ONE year

and compare

3,260 USA military killed in Iraq war over 4 years to date

1,426 children killed by abuse and/neglect in the USA in ONE year

1,232 women killed by an intimate partner in the USA in ONE year

But one day troops will pull out of Iraq..... right?

For too many women and children, the home is a dangerous and deadly war zone.

Sooo, i'm guessing that if the military deaths of your country men and women concerns Y/you, then the deaths of Y/your women and children in their own homes is completely incensing Y/you ... and the great thing is, Y/you can do something to reduce the deaths in Y/your own community!!.. So.. what are Y/you waiting for?

I did not know that many Woman and children were lost to abuse each year, it would be nice if every one would take note and stay on the look out for any sign of abuse, but some go to great length to hide it and make like it is not happening or have been brain washed into believing that they brought it on to them selves.

sighs. I agree. We have to do something, but what? The Preditors use the internet to intice children to them. Hell they don't even have to leave their homes anymore. The police are helpless untill its to late. then they show up and say sorry we couldn't save your child. The courts just let the preditors go with a slap on the wrist and put them on a list. GESsssssssss its so stupid its almost funny. Untill we have judges that hand down life imprisonments or death penalties I see nothing helping. There seems to be NO crime deterrent, no one seems to care about crime or punishment anymore. Here in the states we seem have more groups of people FOR the criminal than against them.
I can't think of the name at the moment but its the group that is always up in arms about peoples rights. They have caused more damage to the criminal system in the last few years than ever before. Maybe we need more people for the victim than the criminal.

MIND BOGGLING STATS ....... when put in those terms sister, it is like a punch to the face or stomach .. if as many people that get behind our troops would get behind this fight to stop abuse and battery against children and women, maybe just maybe harsher sentences would be handed down to those doing this to children and women... look at PETA and what they have done to the FUR industry.. only way to keep this issue of child abuse in the front line and not stop talking about it once the month of April is done .. am speaking in general terms here .. i know that this is a personal issue for you sis... anyways .. thank you for keeping this out there for all to become more familiar with .. love you dearly sister .. ~warm hugs n kisses~ belle

Let's TRY to remember that this is USA Stop Abuse to Children month.. hmmmm??? ... let's focus on the young ones killed, abused and tortured in the suburbs. A little moment to offer our respects and to perhaps even to become committed to reducing this tragic situation.. not too much to ask surely? Or is it?

This is not an excuse to hijack a very important issue to further an unrelated political argument. War is a whole different ballgame and yes, there are plenty of stats from the UN, Amnesty International and UNICEF on the impact of women and children of war.. the IRONIC thing though.. *LOL wryly* .. peacetime isn't that much different for many in terms of stats on death, injury, mutilations and torture in their own homes...by their own countrymen. This is why there are several treaties addressing violence against women and children.

THE POINT was to compare USA military deaths which generate so much emotion.. to the deaths of USA children in peacetime in the USA.. which somehow doesn't seem to generate quite the same reaction .. curious... then again.. perhaps it may be said ... 'i rest my case'

Internet as Disinhibitor/Validator

Internet as Disinhibitor/Validator

Internet as Disinhibitor/Validator magnify

From DSMIV child sexual fantasies as pedophilia** and
the role of the Internet as disinhibitor and validator:

Dr. Fred Berlin, associate professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, states in relation to pedophilia:

...the Internet, [on whether it may bear ] any causal responsibility along the path toward offending. ... it ''provides temptation for some who might not otherwise have crossed the line.''

He added: ''There are three areas of concern.

1) the illusion of anonymity -- an illusion because Internet use can be easily tracked -- leads to disinhibition.

2) there's a blurring of fantasy and reality. There's someone at the other end of the Internet conversation, but it's not quite a real person; there's a feeling of playing a game that can lead to actually doing what one otherwise wouldn't.

3) the easy accessibility can facilitate'' moving over boundaries.

..................

Dr. Robert Prentky, a forensic psychologist at the graduate school of criminal justice at Northeastern University, when he described the Internet as ''a catalyst for fantasy and dangerous if the control over behavior is markedly impaired.''

..............................

David Burton, professor at University of Michigan School of Social Work in Ann Arbor who explains the link between the fantasy and ideation level of pedophilia to those progress to the next step, acting out the fantasies. He states:

The link between child pornography and child molestation is strong. "Not everyone who reads porn acts out, but everyone who acts out does read child pornography," Burton says.

.............................

The Internet makes it easier for sexual predators to act out, says Ruben Rodriguez, director of the Exploited Children unit of the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children. "It gets to the point when (porn) is not sufficient. ... Then they get on the Internet and find like-minded individuals who give them a lot of validation."

......................

David D'Amora, head of the Center for the Treatment of Problem Sexual Behavior, who has about 800 child sexual abusers under his watch in Connecticut, he talked about the Net's abundant porn and disembodied chat-room conversation as a ''disinhibitor.''

**APA DSM-IV-TR criteria for pedophilia are:
A. Over a period of 6 months recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children (generally age 13 years or younger)
B. The person has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies caused marked distress or interpersonal difficulty;
C. The person [pedophile] is at least age 16 years and at least 5 years older than the child or children in Criterion A.

COMMENT:

A most thoughtful and thought-full note on one of the most heinous of crimes against humanity. A few random thoughts: I'm glad you included a note from Fred Berlin, as he is a noted and well-credentialed expert in the field of the treatment of sex offenders. Unfortunately, his work is highly controversial, and his treatment success rate has been called into question. I suppose this illustrates the tenacious nature of the behavior and its resistance to "cure."

I must disagree with Dr. Burton's assessment of the motivations behind pedophilic acts (as opposed to ideations) Dr. Kenneth Lanning (formerly of the FBI), in "Child Molesters: A Behavioral Analysis" observes that there may be multiple reasons for child abuse of a sexual nature, just as adult rape may have non-sexual origins, and that most perpetrators are not primarily interested in children. In fact, it is estimated that only 2 to 10 percent of child sexual abuse perpetrators meet the regular criteria for pedophilia. (Kinsey-Report, Lautmann, Brongersma, Groth). This is a sobering thought.

There are, in fact, two broad categories of offenders: the pedophilic offender meets the diagnostic criteria for pedophilia and is likely to offend against multiple children due to his or her orientation. Then there is the situational offender, who is more likely to have a target of convenience based on availability: this is the person who is stressed and has an unavailable partner and acts out against their own child or other near family member. Crimes involving situational offenders are far more common than pedophilic offenders. As is the case with homicide, you are much more likely to be attacked by someone you know than a total stranger. Not very encouraging.

To split hairs a bit, in a recent (2002) report before a congressional subcommittee, Michael Heimbach (of the FBI's Crimes Against Children Unit) noted that there is a strong correlation between the collection and use of chlid pornography and child molestation. However, the material cited is usually of a visual, photographic nature and its content gives an indication of the molester's volatility. For example, some people will become aroused by images of naked children, but will be repulsed by images of adults engaged in sexual acts with children. The latter are far more likely to offend.

Moreover, this source and others usually inplicate the Internet in child molestation in two ways: the trolling of chat rooms by molesters who make contact with young people and seduce them into meetings for sexual activities, and the involvement of molestors in internet bulletin boards, F-serves and organized or disorganized chat room and news groups in which they can dialogue with and support other people with the same interests. The language on these cites is explicit and aimed at educating, supporting and rationalizing child exploitation.

I'm aware that you are angered by the existance of the Family room on lit, and it has been my experience from observing this room that very little open dialogue goes on in there. it seems to be a large group of people who conduct their fantasies through PMs, and therefore it falls into a gray area regarding the research available.

As arrest rates do not match the rates of occurance or even reporting of abuse, and the prevalence of pornography is insidious and wide-spread, I think we really must focus our efforts at pervention as well as prosecution: education in the schools and other service groups must make children aware of the behaviors of molesters, their innocense in the occurrance of these behaviors, and how to report occurrance of these behaviors to adults. Since a number of studies show that about 1/3 of the responders admit to having viewed child pornography of some type and/or actively fantasized about sex with an underage child, it's clear that the danger is there.

Thanks for your continuing efforts to shed light on a subject that has been kept too long in the dark. Awareness matters!

Child Abuse in the Net or - WORDS ARE 'JUST WORDS'???!!

WORDS ARE 'JUST WORDS'???!! magnify
Words are 'just words'? 'mere words'? Really???

To the person that made that particular statement in response to my comments about the Lit Family Room, I respectfully beg to differ. It appears several other sources also believe words and ideation are more than 'just words'.

I am working on the assumption that the comment placed under the preceding "women as uncovered meat"post was really meant for the Family Room post....

So let's start by considering pedophilia..what is it... and how do we know who is a pedophile?

A word on pedophilia.
The majority of pedophiles are those who have ideation about child sexual relationships, control of children, plus or minus pedophilic activities. But this is not merely my professional opinion, the American Psychiatric Association states:

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Ed. 2000 (DSMV-IV):

Criteria for 302.2 Pedophilia

A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, OR behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children (generally age 13 years or younger).

B. The person has acted on these urges, OR the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.

C. The person is at least age 16 years and at least 5 years older than the child or children in Criterion A.

Now, we all know words ARE actions... this notion is held in criminal law in relation to stalking, assault and even anti-terrorism laws as well as in civil law in relation to slander and libel.

For those interested, a little more on the best interests of children:

All countries that are signatories to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are required to hold the best interests of the children in their communities as paramount. This includes fostering a safe and secure environment and sending very clear messages about the necessity:

  • To encourage compassion, care and nurturing for children.
  • To place a high value on children.
  • To care for the vulnerable.

This includes dissuading and condemning actions and words...yes... AND WORDS..which may be to the detriment of the child.

  • Bearing in mind that the need to extend particular care to the child has been stated in the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child of 1924 and in the Declaration of the Rights of the Child adopted by the General Assembly on 20 November 1959 and recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (in particular in articles 23 and 24), in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (in particular in article 10) and in the statutes and relevant instruments of specialized agencies and international organizations concerned with the welfare of children,
  • Bearing in mind that, as indicated in the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, "the child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth"

The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights—civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too.

The Convention sets out these rights in 54 articles and two Optional Protocols. It spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. The four core principles of the Convention are non-discrimination; devotion to the best interests of the child; the right to life, survival and development; and respect for the views of the child. Every right spelled out in the Convention is inherent to the human dignity and harmonious development of every child. The Convention protects children's rights by setting standards in health care; education; and legal, civil and social services.

By agreeing to undertake the obligations of the Convention (by ratifying or acceding to it), national governments have committed themselves to protecting and ensuring children's rights and they have agreed to hold themselves accountable for this commitment before the international community. States parties to the Convention are obliged to develop and undertake all actions and policies in the light of the best interests of the child.

"It's Just Words" seems to be the easiest excuse for people to use, right up there with "it's only online". Either way, it's lame. Someone needs to stand up and make it known, I'm glad you did.

Thing is.. it's a statement that is quite simply not true. Words are one of the most powerful means of conveying intent, action, emotions and information generally. If the law does not regard words as mere words in relation to certain criminal acts ......

You are absolutely correct br. Words are the most powerful develpment of the human species. They define our actions, in both good and awful ways. The Family Room is invitation to learn unlawful behaviors. Thank you for raising this. We should discuss with the cms before the law catches up with a treasured site.

Some of the worst things most of us can remember have to do with words people said, as opposed to what they did. By the way, "Foley investigation may lead to charges under sexual predator law he co-sponsored" has been the headline around the US lately. The charges won't be for anything he "did" but the "words he texted". So, is it really just words?

Victim or Survivor: What Makes the Difference?

Victim or Survivor: What Makes the Difference?

RESILIENCE

Why is it that S/some P/people seem to survive the most terrible hardships, abuse and trauma and O/others seem to be perpetual victims? There is a growing body of evidence that suggests resilience is the key.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Resiliency is the ability to spring back from and successfully adapt to adversity. An increasing body of research from the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and sociology is showing that most people–including young people–can bounce back from risks, stress, crises, and trauma and experience life success. (Psychologist Sybil Wolin, Ph.D)

Resilience (or "psychological resilience") describes the capacity of people to cope with stress and catastrophe. It is also used to indicate a characteristic of resistance to future negative events.

Resilience is adaptive ability. The process of managing and coping with hardship. It is not the exclusive tool of the superhuman/supervictim who is feted for 'making good', but it is the accumulation of small successes that occur along with faltering steps, setbacks, disappointments and even failure .

Resilience is the process of persisting in the face of adversity. We see evidence of resilience in the small details of people's lives as they try to deal constructively with the daily challenges that hardship brings.

The concept of resilience as paradox encompasses:
the psychological damage ...and

the enduring strength

that can result from struggling with hardship.
It is based on research with people
who grew up in difficult circumstances
and who are
leading satisfying adult lives.
Studies and programs adopting a strength-based resiliency approach have identified seven major resiliencies:

Insight - asking tough questions and giving honest answers.

Independence - distancing emotionally and physically from the sources of trouble in one's life.

Relationships - making fulfilling connections to other people.

Initiative - taking charge of problems.

Creativity - using imagination and expressing oneself in art forms.

Humor - finding the comic in the tragic.

Morality - acting on the basis of an informed conscience.

Researchers are concluding that each person has an innate capacity for resiliency, "a self-righting tendency" that operates best when people have resiliency-building conditions in their lives. These conditions are described in the Resiliency Quiz. To see how resilient YOU are why not take the quiz?......*smiles* http://www.resiliency.com/htm/resiliencyquiz.htm

((((hugs))))) i so enjoyed reading this. i roll my eyes and despair when i see people define themselves today by acts perpetrated against them years, sometimes decades, ago. Shit happens... to almost everyone at some time or another... and whether you end up as a vitim or a survivor is all down to attitude. As the skiing tenet says.. "it's not about how many times you fall down, it's about how many times you get up"

i absolutely ADORE the phrase "being able to survive it doesn't mean it was ever ok".... *soft smiles*.... sooooo true...

*boogies off your page singing the Beyonce classic.. "I'm a survivor, I'm not gonna give up, I'm not gon' stop, I'm gonna work harder, I'm a survivor, I'm gonna make it, I will survive, Keep on survivin'"

Quite honestly i still don't know how i picked up at times to stand up straight again and it certainly showed me that i have more strength in me than i ever knew. "fall seven times, get up eight" as well as "and this too shall pass" became my mantras. Confucius once said "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

~~~smile~~~ thanks....this was a nice read and very thought provoking :-)
oops meant to get this in there... dark humour is what gets me by at times .. picking out hubby's casket i saw a gun metal gray one looked at my brother said thats the one, hubby would of liked it cuz it was the colour of his gun.. then chosing the plot it was windy as all else.. the undertaker's hair was not moving at all, mine was helter skelter asked my brother what kind of hairspray did he think the undertaker used .. my brother almost died laffing then and there.. i sit here laffing at that memory .. for all else that read this .. please understand this about my late hubby and my relationship, he abused me, his death released me from hell.. no i'm not cold and callous, just a lot better off!!
